Capture guide

How to blur private details in a screenshot before you share it

Open the screenshot in the Capture editor, pick Blur and redact and drag a box over each name, email or number. Everything under the box is pixelated, and the image you save, copy or share has those pixels replaced. The editor is part of Capture Pro ($10/month or $100/year). Capturing a page and downloading it as PNG are free.

Screenshots of inboxes, chats and dashboards often show more than you meant to share. Blurring the details in the image itself means the copy you send doesn't contain them.

Step by step

Blur or redact private details in a screenshot

  1. Open the side panel

Add Capture from the Chrome Web Store, then click its icon in the toolbar to open the side panel.

  2. Capture the page and click Edit

Choose Full page, Scrolling area or Visible area and capture. When the side panel shows Your capture is ready, click Edit to open it in the Capture editor.

  3. Pick Blur and redact

Click Blur and redact in the editor's toolbar, or press B.

  4. Drag over each private detail

Drag a box over each name, email, phone number or account number. To move or resize a box, pick Select (V) and drag it. Delete removes the selected box.

  5. Save, copy or share it

Click Save PNG, or Copy to paste it into a chat or email. The arrow next to Save PNG has JPG, WebP, PDF and Share as a link.

  • The blur is part of the image you export: the original pixels under each box aren't in the PNG, JPG, WebP or PDF you save.
  • Blur pixelates the area in coarse blocks. To leave no trace of something, pick Crop, drag the edges to cut it out and click Apply crop.
  • It works on any image, not only captures: open the Capture editor at capture.appzlr.com/edit/, sign in, and open, drop or paste the image.
FAQ

Questions and answers

Is blurring a screenshot free?

No. Blur and redact is part of Capture Pro, $10/month or $100/year, with the rest of the editor. Capturing a page and downloading it as PNG are free.

Can someone undo the blur?

Not from the file. Ctrl+Z undoes a blur only while you're editing; the image you save has pixelated blocks where the details were, not the original pixels. For passwords, keys or anything highly sensitive, crop it out instead, so nothing of it is left in the image.

Can I blur a screenshot I already have?

Yes. Open the Capture editor at capture.appzlr.com/edit/, sign in with your Capture Pro account, and open, drop or paste the image. Then blur it the same way.

Does Capture upload my screenshot?

No. Screenshots and page content are processed on your computer and never uploaded. The only exceptions are ones you choose: an AI edit on Pro + AI sends just the image or area you're editing to Google's Gemini API, and a Pro share link uploads that one capture until the link expires.
